It's not too easy to stop with bubblewrap

Goodyear Tyres AdvertisingIn an interesting stunt for Goodyear in Brazil, Y&R has been inserting sheets of bubble wrap into newspapers and handing them out to drivers in São Paolo as they wait in traffic.

This was part of a campaign with the the message, "Sometimes it's not easy to stop."

It's a curious one, connecting the addictive pleasure of popping bubble wrap with the potential tragedy of braking hard with poor tires instead of Goodyear's ultra-grips but quite fun anyway.

CAMAC's Student Wallpaper Design Competition

CAMAC Design Competition
CAMAC wallpaper Design
To celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of AWN Pugin, a master in the use of colour, pattern and ornament and who was an ardent campaigner for the Gothic style, CAMAC Design partnered with the Fashion & Textile Museum to organise a competition to design a wallpaper for the Palace of Westminster.

Best known for his interior designs of this iconic building, Pugin was one of the first to promote the idea of 'honesty' and 'propriety' in ornament and design, enlisting ornament as a moral influence in society.

CAMAC Design has partnered with the Fashion & Textile Museum in London's Bermondsey Village, which was founded by iconic British designer Zandra Rhodes. The museum showcases a selection of designs from entries to the 4th Annual Student Wallpaper Design Competition during its current exhibition Pop! Design, Culture, Fashion.

A second display of students' work is also on show at Ramsgate Library in Kent until 20th August. Ramsgate is where Pugin designed and built The Grange, his family home, and also nearby St Augustine's church.

The full exhibition will be held in London from 14th - 20th September, forming part of the 10th London Design Festival. Set up to build links between new designers entering the creative industries and the professionals already in it, CAMAC Design is a new company founded by Caroline McNamara, an experienced event and exhibition organiser, and Vice Chair of TEXERE, Textile Education and Research in Europe.

Photographs of Power celebrated at Prix Pictet

PowerPower ArlesThe Rencontres d’Arles festival has announced the shortlist for the fourth Prix Pictet with the subject of Power. There are 12 shortlisted photographers from ten countries that present a wide range of unique perspectives.

From the veteran lenses of Joel Sternfeld, whose images capture “moments of horror” on the faces of attendees to the 11 United Nations Conference on Climate Change as they hear about ecological collapse, to Robert Adams – the oldest nominee – whose documentations of deforestation in the American Northwest are as terrible as they are moving.

Se more of these fantastic images here.

Kinetic rain installation stuns at Changi Airport

Kinetic Rain InstallationA quite beautiful installation has come to Changi Airport, Singapore by Art+ Com, a German media installation design practice.

This kinetic sculpture represents the rain and has great aesthetic appeal with 1,216 individual raindrops in bronze.

The piece gently undulates and then accelerating rapidly into a chaotic deluge. The summer downpour has never looked so good.

Take a look at the video below.

Computer warning messages pop up across New York subway

Subway Street ArtSubway ArtOne question on the lips of New York subway users over the past few weeks is “Who is Jilly Ballistic?” .

No one seems to know the answer but his street art is popping up all over the subway, provoking viewers to think about the advertising they are viewing through the use of OS warning pop-ups.

See more of these on 'It's Nice That' blog.

Is this art or vandalism? What do you think?

BE OPEN Sound Portal launched in Trafalgar Square

Be Open Trafalgar SquareAs part of this September's Design Week the BE OPEN Sound Portal will appear in Trafalgar Square, London.

This is an entirely new kind of installation that focuses on the design that you can’t see – that of acoustics and sound – rather than visual spectacle.

Developing the creative campaign for the B2B Marketing Awards 2012

B2B Marketing Awards Creative 2012Having managed the B2B Marketing Awards event for the past five years, The Think Tank was approached by the organisers, Silver Bullet Publishing, to develop the creative theme for the 2012 awards.

Seeking to engage a wider audience, and increase entry levels from  all sectors of the B2B marketing industry, The Think Tank was asked to produce a campaign that would resonate with marketers from both agency and client side and encourage them to engage with the awards at various levels. It was also very important that the theme could work in an integrated manner across a range of marketing channels as well as providing an engaging and fun format for the Awards event itself.

The Think Tank developed several concepts that would answer the brief and the High Flyers campaign was chosen. This is designed to celebrate the outstanding creativity in the B2B Marketing sector and position the awards as the premier industry event, not only for agencies but also for clients side marketers.

The flexibility provided by the 'retro feel' creative execution allows the campaign to be extended from launch to the event and beyond, offering B2B Marketing the continuity of message they were looking for in 2012.

The Think Tank is continuing to develop an integrated campaign to promote the awards over the coming months and encourage entry and engagement.

Entering the world of Wikipedia

Wikipedia
The UK’s Chartered Institute for Public Relations (CIPR), the professional body for public relations practitioners, has announced special guidance for Wikipedia entries.

The guidance for public relations professionals using the site includes a number of recommendations and has gleaned global support in recognition of its potential for building mutual understanding between Wikipedians and public relations practitioners, the CIPR says.

The most significant of these is that public relations professionals should not directly edit Wikipedia pages relating to their organisation or brand but should instead suggest amendments to Wikipedians – the community of regular Wikipedia editors.

The consultation period for the guidance was hosted on Wikimedia UK, and the CIPR advises it will continue to be reviewed and refreshed as the relationship between the Wikipedia and public relations communities continues to progress.

Anti-smoking ad that pints out hypocrisy

Anti-Smoking AdvertisingThailand has launched a very thought provoking anti-smoking ad which points out the hypocrisy of smokers when approached by a child who asks them for a light.

Every smoker the child approached tried to persuade him not to smoke and how dangerous to his health it is.

The child finishes the stunt by handing the smoker a leaflet explaining their hypocrisy.

The ad received more than 960,000 views before being taken down but it has now reappeared again.

Please view it below and let us know what you think.

Fifth Wall app interacts with performer

Fifth Wall AppFifth Wall AppA new app for performing arts publication 2wice called “Fifth Wall” takes interactivity to another level, allowing you to interact with performers by moving your iPad screen.

It was created in collaboration with the choreographer Jonah Bokaer and 2wice publisher Patsy Tarr and takes advantage of the unique spatial and physical parameters of the iPad. In the app, Bokaer engages with the edges of the iPad screen and as users interact with the iPad, the performance responds to the movement of the user, flipping when the screen is turned, or changing when the surface is swiped.

A great use of apps to engage an audience.

See the video of the making of the app below and click here to download.

Celebrating traditional craftsmen in images

Optimo HatsScotty Bob SkisSteinway & Sons PianosBanjosThis is an interesting project by Tadd Landis Myers which celebrates American craftsmen through a series of enigmatic and inspirational images.

Quite beautiful photography looking at the craftsmen themselves at work and the object they create.

Subjects include Steinway & Sons Pianos, Chuck Lee Banjos, Optimo Fine Hats, Pro Saddles & Spurs and Scotty Bob Skis.

“I dedicate this project to my father Landis Wilson Myers, a true craftsman himself. He was a wood worker, home builder, metal worker, guitar player, printing pressman, baseball player, self-made business man, and a “fixer” of almost anything. My father loved working with his hands and would have felt a very deep connection to this project.”~Tadd Landis Myers

A great way of championing traditional craftsmanship. Maybe someone in the UK could start a similar project to celebrate British craftsmen.

See all these craftsman and more at work here.
