Electrolux announces Design Lab 2010 Shortlist

Electrolux announces Design Lab 2010 finalists and show their designs in the video below. This includes eight concepts for 'creative solutions for compact living':

Fia Carafe by Nina Jobs

Fia Carafe Nina Jobs.jpgA simple, functional and attractive carafe is launched by Nina Jobs through Design House Stockholm.
They comment 'Nina Jobs excels in her quest for functional simplicity with straightforward natural forms and colors. But not without a sophisticated twist to a mouth-blown carafe for wine and water, or to be used as a flower vase. It is no wonder that the Fia is named after the Swedish version of the board game Ludo. The straight lines allude to her playful character, as well as the precisely ground spheres in amber, pink, black and clear crystal.'

Selfridges windows feature sculptures by Kyle Bean

Selfridges 2.jpgSelfridges 1.jpgThe current windows at Selfridges in London feature a set of sculptures by Kyle Bean, based on the scientific law of conservation of energy. He has based these sculptures on the scientific theory – which states that 'matter cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed'. Each consists of a set of giant hanging scales on which two items are placed. One is an object in its original form, the other a transformed version of it. The scales then prove that the objects are still of equal weight, and thus still essentially the same.

Kuksas design rises from the ground in Eindhoven

18 Septemberplein 3.jpgItalian architectural firm, Massimiliano Fuksas, has designed 18 Septemberpleinin, Eindhoven, a major square in the city. It is the connection between the central station area and the main shopping district of the city and with a need for 2000 parking places for bicycles and providing an important flow through of pedestrians they designed an underground bicycle parking area. This left the square free for pedestrians.
Two cone-like shapes provide the entrance to the parking area, created with ceramic tiles, fountains lights and glass elements embedded in the square floor. Lighting and a flow of light through the glass flooring from the parking area below creates an impressive sight at night.
