Payphones become time machines in Manhatten

Recalling 1993Recalling 1993In New York City a project by Droga5 in collaboration with the New Museum has allowed inhabitants to listen to the sounds and memories of 1993.

Part of an exhibition which highlights 1993 as a year of change for the city and the world titled "NYC 1993: Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star," the payphone experience gets users to call a special number from selected phones across the city, which in turn allows them to relive that location in 1993.

The phone project titled Recalling 1993 is a huge undertaking, using tour guides and locals to re-tell stories, and is the first use of the payphones whose future is facing some speculation since the age of the smart phone.

An interactive map of the payphones included can be found here. Below is a video outlining the project.

Their most recent project focusses on evolving the gif format to something they're calling 3D lenticular… to great effect.

The Saline Project is an award winning group of artists and have worked on many projects including when they were commissioned by ABC to make a title sequence to 110 Stories (below) which involved manipulating photographs taken on 9/11 in New York to give them depth.

It's all in the movement

Music Project This interesting multimedia music project, called ‘Can’t Help Myself’, is the result of an ambitious challenge posed by V Energy to music producer Joel Little (Goodnight Nurse, Kids Of 88) and a part of the V Motion Project.

The idea was to create and perform a track using only the body’s movement. With the help of technology experts, motion graphic artists, dancers, Burundi drummers, guitarists, marching bands and the vocal talent of Brandon Black from The Wyld, ‘Can’t Help Myself’ was created, V was the catalyst for this true multimedia collaboration between experts in various fields.

Individuals in the crowd

Individual PhotographyIndividual in the CrowdIndividualsThe » one « is a project by Nicolas Ritter that focuses upon individuals within a crowd.

The artist say, 'It particularly imitates the way in which the human eye observes: not viewing a crowd as a crowd, but observing little micro-scenes inside of it.

All images are taken in London and feature static photography with one individual moving in the crowd.

Very interesting - some moving individuals are more easy to spot than others.

See all of the project here.

Interactive Gallery of Lost Art

Gallery of Lost ArtGallery of Lost Art'The Gallery of Lost Art' is a year-long online exhibition curated by the Tate and developed by UK creative studio ISO.

It displays artworks that have disappeared for reasons of theft, arson, rejection or just having been discarded.

'Art history tends to be the history of what has survived,' reflects the gallery's curator Jennifer Mundy, 'but loss has shaped our sense of art’s history in ways that we are often not aware of.

'The website is visually structured as an open warehouse floor, viewed from above, with different chalk headers on the ground delineating the subject of that area of the gallery: destroyed, stolen, discarded, rejected, erased, or ephemeral. users can zoom into particular areas, and by clicking on specific projects they can access essays, photos, film footage or interviews, and other material about the artwork.'

Why the the piece of art was lost is also documented and the site will add one new work each week for six months and six months after this the website will disappear itself.

Celebrating traditional craftsmen in images

Optimo HatsScotty Bob SkisSteinway & Sons PianosBanjosThis is an interesting project by Tadd Landis Myers which celebrates American craftsmen through a series of enigmatic and inspirational images.

Quite beautiful photography looking at the craftsmen themselves at work and the object they create.

Subjects include Steinway & Sons Pianos, Chuck Lee Banjos, Optimo Fine Hats, Pro Saddles & Spurs and Scotty Bob Skis.

“I dedicate this project to my father Landis Wilson Myers, a true craftsman himself. He was a wood worker, home builder, metal worker, guitar player, printing pressman, baseball player, self-made business man, and a “fixer” of almost anything. My father loved working with his hands and would have felt a very deep connection to this project.”~Tadd Landis Myers

A great way of championing traditional craftsmanship. Maybe someone in the UK could start a similar project to celebrate British craftsmen.

See all these craftsman and more at work here.

What colour is fashion across Europe?

Pimkie Colour Forecast
Pimkie Colour ForecastThis project by Pimkie called Color Forecast has been developed by Pedro Cruz and runs feeds from high definition cameras in Milan, Paris and Antwerp to track the colour of fashions worn across the cities.

The software analyzes the passing colors and shows in real time which colors are worn most often, then the colors are compiled into an infographic to see how trends evolve..

Can this forecast the trends and how our colour tastes change over the seasons? An interesting project.

See the website here and see how it works below.

A rainbow of colour appears over Omaha

Rainbow over Bemis Center
Michael Jones McKean’s
“The Rainbow” Art Project creates rainbows over The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in downtown Omaha.

In clear weather the rainbow will appear twice a day, for 20 minutes, and are created using sunlight, renewable energy and 100% captured rainwater.

The project was a decade in the making and represents a collaboration between irrigation and rainwater harvesting experts, Lindsay Corporation, structural and mechanical engineers, atmospheric scientists, Bemis Center and artist Michael Jones McKean

Quite a beautiful project that will start in early June and run until 15th September.
